What is MacGPT
MacGPT is a macOS application that integrates ChatGPT into your Mac's menubar, providing quick access to the AI chatbot from anywhere on your system. It offers multiple ways to interact with ChatGPT: a global text field that pops up in the middle of the screen, an inline feature that works within text fields, and a menubar interface. The app can use the ChatGPT website or the OpenAI API for a native experience. It is available for macOS Monterey and Ventura.
Key features
MacGPT includes several features to enhance ChatGPT usage on Mac:
- Global: A text field that appears on screen for quick access.
- Inline: Type a trigger phrase and prompt in any text field to have ChatGPT complete it.
- Menubar: Access ChatGPT from the menu bar, either via the website or natively with the API.
- Easy Copying: Copy entire conversations as readable transcripts.
- Conversation Mode: Talk to ChatGPT using voice, enabling back-and-forth spoken conversations.
Use cases
MacGPT is useful for Mac users who frequently use ChatGPT and want to integrate it into their workflow. The global feature allows quick access without switching apps, while the inline feature can assist with writing in any application. Conversation mode is ideal for hands-free interaction, and the easy copying feature helps save and share conversations. It also supports ChatGPT Plus accounts and can be used with your own OpenAI API key for a faster experience.
Pricing
MacGPT is available for download from the official website. The page does not specify a price, but it mentions that the ChatGPT website can be accessed without paying anything extra. For native mode, you need your own OpenAI API key, which may incur costs based on usage. The companion iOS app, GeePeeTee, is free and also uses your own API key.
